The socks patterns are designed with the merino lace yarn that I offer in my shop. It is just regular lace weight yarn but it is exactly perfect for these patterns. You certainly can try another lace weight yarn but I do not believe you will get the same results. I tried several different base yarns before finding this one. This is the only one that worked nicely for socks that I could find. It is very stretchy and tightly spun making it very round. I strongly recommend using this yarn at least the first time you use any of the patterns. Then you can branch out if you so desire.
Crochet in general is not as stretchy as knitting is. That is why knitting is ideal for socks. When I set out to create a comparable pattern for crocheters I knew there would be some compromises. The crochet sock pattern down side is that they don't stretch as much as knitting socks do. The good news is that in the end it doesn't matter much. They are a little hard to get on at first but once on they fit beautifully. You should put them on gently so you don't damage them. The more you wear and wash them the better they fit!
The most stretchy of the patterns to date is the Hills and Valleys pattern. The cuff is worked vertically rather than horizontally making the cuff super stretchy. They are so stretchy that you can easily fold down the cuff on hot days for a cooler wearing. This is how I wear them in the summer.
When it is time to wash your socks you should wash them by hand for the longest life of your socks. This yarn is not superwash and the socks could felt if you don't wash them properly. I have washed them in the machine on COLD water ONLY and then hung them to dry and they do very well with this. More times than not I just take them in the shower with me and wash them with a little wool wash and hang them in the shower to dry. This way they get washed right after I wear them and I won't accidentally drop them in the washer and dryer.
I love these socks and I wear them much more than any of my knitted socks. There is just something about them that is irresistible. I love it when people ask me about my knitted socks and I tell them they are crocheted. They are always surprised and it brings public awareness that crochet is super cool too! Get out there and crochet and show them what we can do:)
If you ever have any questions about the sock patterns don't hesitate to ask. I mean it! I am right here all the time and I want you to be successful and enjoy your socks.
